The face clean-up tool corrects errors in your geometry such as: ngons, non-planar faces, lamina faces and non-manifold geometry. While these errors are generally undetectable and unproblematic in 3D design software, they can bring about mistakes during rendering, or increase render times. Meshmatic scans your file to detect these errors and either deletes them or corrects them.
List of mesh errors Meshmatic automatically corrects:
- Ngons: A face or polygon that consists of 5 or more or more sides or edges. Ngons disrupt the edge flow of your model and since they are hard to subdivide, they make some modeling operations hard to perform
- Non-planar faces: Faces with 3 or more vertices where one or more of the vertices lie in a different plane
- Lamina faces: Faces that share the same edges and vertices, they essentially sit on top of each other and are therefore difficult to spot
- Non-manifold geometry: 3D shape that when unfolded into a 2D surface has a normal’s pointing in different directions. 3D shape that cannot be unfolded into a single
- Inside out faces: During tesselation, faces can be turned inside out or have edges pointing in random directions
